The Federal Ministry of Environment has joined forces with UNICEF to advance the Green Rising Initiative, a youth-led movement dedicated to combating climate change and promoting environmental sustainability across Nigeria. This partnership was highlighted during a visit by a UNICEF delegation led by Kevin Frey to the Ministry in Abuja, where discussions focused on empowering young Nigerians to lead grassroots environmental action.
The Green Rising Initiative aims to mobilise over 500,000 youths by 2030 through various programmes including afforestation, innovative waste management, and renewable energy education. The initiative plans to engage young people via workshops, eco-challenges, and school campaigns. UNICEF will provide technical support, funding for pilot projects, and connect the initiative to its global network of youth advocates.
This collaboration supports Nigeria’s broader climate goals, including the commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2060. It also targets pressing environmental issues such as deforestation, flooding, and pollution. By involving young people in practical environmental efforts, the initiative seeks to create lasting positive impact on Nigeria’s ecosystem and communities.
The initiative has received warm reception from local communities and youth leaders, who are enthusiastic about taking active roles in environmental protection. Nigerian youth like Chidi Okonkwo from Enugu see this as an opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to sustainability. Moreover, the Green Rising Initiative is expected to expand beyond Nigeria, positioning Nigerian youth as leaders in Africa’s environmental resilience movement.
